We rented a two-person kayak in Kailua and paddled out to the uninhabited Mokulua Islands over Valentine's Day weekend. One of them doesn't allow any human visitors and the other that we paddled to houses a bird sanctuary - and we had the added bonus of being joined by an extremely rare (and unfortunately very endangered) monk seal.
We did a bit of exploring but weren't able to get all the way around the island because the surf was up (this made it a bit tricky to land and launch the kayak, but we made it without spilling. . . which very few people seemed to do be able to do).
